This was because dashboards below 2.0.7371 didn’t have protection within the dashboard to stop a person being able to Jtag the console. However this wasn’t a simple procedure. To Jtag a console required electronic components to be soldered to the consoles main board and an alternative dashboard programmed to the consoles main board to which enabled the Jtag and fully unlocked the console.

The newly installed circuit board is required to override the protection installed by Microsoft to stop customers being able to run Home Brew programs, Emulators and connect un official devicesThe installed circuit board generates a timing pulse which is fired at the CPU chip. If this timing pulse hits the CPU at exactly the correct time and frequency, then this makes the CPU boot the console in unprotected mode and therefore allow the booting of unofficial software.
The industry standard boot times for an RGH console range from 0 seconds - 3 minutes
Console Wizards boot times are 0 - 30 seconds - This Varies on different console models
During this time the console will power on, but not display a picture on the screen.

The only difference would be when the console was updated to a newer dashboard as you would have to create the correct the correct version of dashboard for your console either JTAG or RGH.

*Can I take the console online ? A modified console (JTAG or RGH) cannot directly be taken on the Xbox Live network as the console will be banned. This is due to the fact that the console allows you to modify games, so makes it unfair for games players on the Xbox Live network.
To get around this you will need to use a Stealth service to hide the fact that the console is modified. We don’t have anything to do with Stealth services. You will need to use Google for help with this. One reputable service is run by Team Xecuter, the group that originally brought out the Reset Glitch Hack. Their service is called ’XBLNinja’, but there are others available.
We are sorry that we cannot help with this service or give technical help or advice in setting this up on your console.
*Can I Mod games to give my more money, infinite lives and setup Mod Menus?Yes you can, a JTAG or RGH console can easily allow this. You will need to download and install Mod Menus for the games you want to mod. We don’t install or give any help or advice in this matter, but again you will find all the help you need with this from Google, You Tube or numerous websites available.

To do this you will need to disable ’Live Strong’ in Dash Launch’s setup screen, this will allow you to connect to the Internet.

Every console we sell or modify has Xbox Live and the Internet blocked for the consoles safety within Dashlaunch.
Note
If you intend to to take the console online and have setup a STEALTH service on the console to hide the fact that the console is modified, you will need to go into Dash Launch’s settings (Click on the above image to see what you need to Disable) and Disable the below setting (which be default are enabled).
*Live Block (this disables Xbox live connectivity)
*Live Safe (this disabled the internet, so you will need to switch this off to download covers in Freestyle Dash)An Explanantion of the network setting within DashLauch
Ping Patch
If enabled, ping limit will be removed for system link play. Normally, retail consoles have a 30ms ping limit for system link. With this option enabled, there is no ping limit for system linking. We use this for Xlink KAI or other system link joiners.
Sign Notice
When enabled, Dash Launch will attempt to dismiss annoying sign in notice messages. Enabling this option makes Dash Launch disable any of the sign in screens that pop up. Such as the XeX Menu sign in screen, ect.
LIVE Block
When enabled, DNS resolver blocks LIVE sites. This option blocks your console from resolving XBL DNS connections. Enabling this option blocks LIVE connection, but can still download cover art and screen shots.
LIVE Strong
Has no effect when LIVE block is disabled. When enabled with LIVE block , a more extensive list of domains are blocked than with live block alone. With this option enabled, Dash Launch prevents your console from connecting to ANY XBL domains. Period. Enabling this option blocks your console from downloading cover art and screenshots. This option has no effect if you don’t have LIVE block enabled.
XHTTP
When enabled XHTTP is patch in XAM to allow insecure access. If you don’t know what this is, don’t mess with it. I’m not too sure what this does myself.
No NetStore
If enabled, cloud storage should not show up in the disk selection dialog. With this enabled, you console will not have the cloud storage as an option in the device selection dialog.
DEV Link
If enabled, system link data will be encrypted for communication with DEV kits. With this enabled, you can play system link games with people running DEV kits.
Sock Patch
Don’t enable this if you don’t know what it does. Don’t mess with this option.
Fake Live
Don’t enable this if you don’t know what it does. Seriously. Fake LIVE has a massive effect on games and applications. If you don’t know why you would need this, leave it disabled.
Installing Dashlaunch or changing setting (.i.e enable Live Strong and Live Block, etc)

A few words by FlybyNo:
For Harmonic Memories, I chose my 9 favorite songs from Endless Space and modernized them with new instruments and musicians.
In two pieces we recorded some “duduk”, the Armenian flute emblematic of ES1’s main theme. I also recorded a duet of singers for all the choir parts (that I had sung myself at the time, and I can tell you that I sing particularly badly!). All the rhythmic parts were redone by my assistant Alexandre, and I replaced most of the synthesizers with brand new ones, especially the Solaris by John Bowen, and The River which a French synthesizer only produced in 20 copies to date. There’s always something conniving, sinister and curious about goblins. Their insatiable thirst for coin and riches is a popular trait that’s emphasized across many popular culture films and video games. Seeing these aspects come to life in Gremlins Inc. is fun and charming, as you apply a gremlin’s mind of wit and materialism into a strategic digital board game. Compete against other players and race to the top of the chain with pockets of green cash and tricks up your sleeve. But despite its underground, steampunk galore, Gremlins Inc. is confusing and overwhelming with its information for players, and could use some quality-of-life tweaks to its interface.
Gremlins Inc. is a strategic digital board game that can be played with up to six players. You have twelve cunning gremlins to play as in Clockwork Town. The board game has a feel and aesthetic that’s very reminiscent of underground sewers, steampunk towns, and grimy streets. In some ways, it’s similar to the Hearthstoneexpansion ‘Mean Streets of Gadgetzan,’ but in a board game format with a steeper learning curve. Like Hearthstone, it incorporates the use of cards with different conditions to be met in order to use them. Cards are your primary resource for moving around on the board, as well as for forming strategies against your opponents. But, despite the game’s multiple mechanics to encourage creative innovation, Gremlins Inc. is overloaded with information and it takes some time to comprehend what you should even do.
Thankfully, the tutorial is in-depth, which is great, considering the multiple rules and avenues to remember. The tutorial also includes a practice mode which is helpful and may be a point of interest you’ll frequent before you feel ready to take on other thugs. But, once you arrive in a single-player game, expect to scratch your head and stare brainlessly at the events before you. Part of what I think is the issue is its lack of a detailed interface. From a visual standpoint, Gremlins Inc. looks great, but it’s cluttered with an overcrowded board and very minimal space for the players log, which shows what cards have been played, results of random dice rolling, and essentially, the entire game. The backlog is exceptionally quick, and trying to read back on past turns is confusing, as it relies on symbols rather than explanation.
Speaking of symbols, there are many to familiarize yourself with. Score is the resource you need in order to win the game. At the end of every session, the player with the most score wins the game. Score can be earned by playing different cards and resources. Money is the resource that you use to pay for playing different cards, to give bribes, and to feel better on a bad day. Playing cards enable you to move around on the board, with each card containing move points, the number of tiles you can move over. Across the board are multiple tiles of various types that affect the gameplay. Tiles include earning money, losing money, being interrogated by the police, or entering the casino and gambling your way to some more resources.
Aside from moving around on the board, cards can also be played on corresponding tiles to achieve special effects. Some cards require you to pay resources in order to play them, which is frustrating when you intend to play a specific card on a certain tile, but somehow along the way, you’re being framed and find yourself in Jail for several turns. By the time you’re out of Jail and ready to make your way back, you don’t have enough money to play the card you held onto for so long. Much of your experience in Gremlins Inc. is about framing and blocking your opponents, giving them a rough time. But it feels awfully unbalanced and unfair, meaning that no matter what strategies you think of, it all comes crashing down by the sheer luck and cruelty you experience in the game.
Much like Monopoly,Gremlins Inc. also has a Jail that opposing players can send you to, or certain events on the board can also lead you behind bars. At the start of each turn that you spend in Jail, you must choose your behavior. If you choose bad behavior, you have a chance to earn resources as well as to speed up the increase in your Jail rank. However, you also face a higher chance of gaining Malice points and having to spend an extra turn in Jail. If you choose good behavior, you run a higher chance of shortening your sentence. However, you may lose some of your Jail experience. If you choose neutral behavior, any of the events from the other lines of behavior may happen. At the same time, there’s a slightly higher chance of receiving amnesty.
On every turn spent in Jail, you get to choose a Jail event that will happen to you. You can choose the first event that’s being offered, or skip it to get to the next one. With every turn that you spend in Jail, you earn Jail experience. When you collect enough experience, your Jail rank increases. Once you reach a certain Jail rank, you can’t lose it. As your Jail rank increases, you get access to more profitable Jail events. You are also able to skip more Jail events in one turn. Upon reaching the highest Jail rank in the game, you start to earn Score points for simply spending time in the Jail. It’s a clever mechanic that many other popular board games don’t consider, but again, your choices don’t feel significant as it’s randomly determined and somewhere along the way, you’ll find yourself in a miserable spot anyway.
Elections are also another way for players to earn Score points and influence the events of the board. Elections happen every 20 rounds. The player with the highest number of votes wins the Elections, earns the title of Governor and receives one Score point. Votes are one of the essential game resources and are used to win the Elections. Votes are earned by playing certain cards or effectively using other players’ stats to your advantage. As soon as the Elections kick off, the player with the least Malice points gets three votes as a bonus. The player with the most votes wins the Elections. Votes tend to feel like a waste of time, as much as your other Gremlins Inc. experiences, it’s all about manoeuvering through your opponents and hoping they don’t decide to be bad to you. Which, more often than not, is impossible.
Playing a game of Gremlins Inc. also feels long, drawn-out, repetitive, and boring. There are multiplayer modes and you can join lobby rooms to play with or against other players, but there isn’t a real difference between the single player mode or the multiplayer mode, as both use the same mechanics. It can take up to 20, or sometimes 40 rounds, depending on what mode you’re playing, and over time, you start to care less about what’s really happening on the board. Gremlins Inc. also requires a stable internet connection to play, so if you’re like me, and you have wonky Australian internet, then expect many timeouts and disconnections. A Friday night in the fall of 1971 and it’s time to pull another ’all-nighter’. Ah, the college days; the time when pressure was having a psych paper due just when you were on the verge of discovering a completely new method for solving differential equations of the third degree, a feat, of course, that would result in the total economic re-alignment of the free world and better sex for all. So what do you do? Pull an all-nighter. This was not to be the standard sit-in-the-library-until-you-are-comatose-all-nighter; this is special; this is important. We pack the car and make the 90-mile trek to Chicago for an intense, non-stop, weekend of Risk. Hey, if you can’t change the world, why not just conquer it?
This is not to suggest that college was all play and no work but those Risk weekends were exceptional; on the order of a monthly game convention. Around campus the Risk freaks were viewed with disdain (this was, after all, the time of the Vietnam War) especially by the Chess players (but then, they thought ’free love’ meant that the local ’ladies’ were offering discounts). The poet Omar Kayam once penned: ’a loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou’. For us it was air hockey, pinball and Risk (the engineering majors would have included cigars). Unfortunately, as with everything else in the universe, the law of entropy required that this come to an end; and it did. Soon it was a mortgage, soccer practice and a mini-van.
Gaming of any kind was relegated to the wee hours of the morning and usually consisted of a computer opponent or something on the internet. It just wasn’t the same. It didn’t take long to realize that the refrigerator was not intended for cooling beer and soda; it is a gigantic, master scheduling board with a zillion magnets holding as many schedules and reminders along with school art, pop star posters and Pizza Hut coupons. The only face-to-face gaming over this period, the only exception to the monitor opponent was GenCon. Attendance was required and we made it every year; no exceptions. Each year we would discuss the changes we would try to make to get back into weekly gaming but it simply never worked. And then one day in August of 2000, I walked out of the house and realized that something was missing; something big was missing and this was very important. Though there were now four cars in the driveway; there was no mini-van! The kids could drive themselves to soccer; the scheduling board could be used to cool drinks again. I had some free time.
Occasionally the universe falls into sync; it actually cooperates and Mankind takes another small step forward; this was one of those moments. I had the revelation about the cars/kids/refrigerator/free time while waiting to be picked up for our trip to GenCon 2000. The knowledge that I now had additional free time intensified the normal anticipation of going to GenCon and seeing more of old friends. (Note: there is physically more of them to see - it’s true, muscle does turn.)
We arrived at GenCon, beginning our usual random walk eventually strolling to the exhibitors’ area. Navigating the maze of vendors, Klingons and Darth Vader wannabees, we stumbled on the new Avalon Hill booth; and there it was. As that renowned singer/philosopher Madonna once sang: ’like a moth to a flame.. ’, I was drawn. Forget the Bush-Gore campaign, Monica’s dress, the price of gas and the irrational exuberance of the stock market; forget it all. The planets were in alignment, tachyons were doing what tachyons are supposed to do, the Attack of the Clones was being delayed again; the universe was paying back. I stood there spellbound; there it was, displayed in all of its oversized, demo board glory. My heart raced, pores opened and rivers of perspiration rolled as I reached out to touch it, to roll the dice.
Risk 2210 A.D. had arrived. The addiction returned. A Trip to Middle Earth
Internet sites abound indicating archeologists have found Risk equipment dating to the time of Alexander the Great. I suspect their evidence is in error. The earliest evidence I discovered indicates that Joseph and his brothers brought it to Egypt with them and that the 6 player colors were derived from the colors of his coat. (I could be slightly off here as the Talmud is very cryptic on the matter and my Hebrew is rusty at best.)
Laying that aside, the question remains: where did it all begin? (At this time I suggest that the speilfreaks sit down so as to avoid hurting themselves in the event of a fall.) Risk originated in France (the first Euro?) in 1957 as La Conqueste du Monde, Conquest of the World. Parker Brothers introduced it to the United States, with slight modifications to the rules, in 1959. Parker Brothers renamed the game Risk: the Continental Game. According to legend, the R.I.S.K. are the initials of a Parker Brothers sales exec’s grandchildren. Some time later the game was re-titled Risk: the Game of Global Domination.
For those cave dwelling gamers who have never played Risk, a short synopsis is in order. Two to six players face the challenge of being the last-man-standing. It is the board game equivalent to a Battle Royal in Smack Down. There is never any doubt concerning who wins a Risk game; the game ends when there is only one player remaining, every piece on the board is the same color. The board is a stylized map of the world divided into 42 territories. Players receive armies in order to attack adjacent territories and add them to their empire. When the last territory of an empire is lost, that player leaves the game. Cards are won and sets formed to gain additional playing units. This is the earliest example of area control and set collecting, (so often found in today’s Euros) in a board game. Conflict is resolved by die rolls. Risk is a non-linear game and requires a smattering of statistical knowledge in order to play competently or as some have suggested, ’Be pretty damn lucky’.
That’s the core game; the same game as is found in Toys-R-Us and Wal-Mart today. In the past 43 years it has sold millions of copies and continues to sell to this day. At one point in the late 70s the game was so popular that Playboy magazine included it in a strategy guide they published. Numerous variants and house rules have been developed. The major portion of these involve alternate set-up or alternate objectives. In later editions of Risk, Parker Brothers included some of the more popular variants in what is known as ’mission Risk’.
In 1986, Parker Brothers introduced Castle Risk; the first new Risk in 27 years. The core system remained but everything else had changed. Radical alterations included a new playing map that covered only Europe, hidden armies and special cards including spies, marshals, generals, admirals, and a diplomat. The castles were strongholds and a naval component was added. (The original print run included a nifty plastic boat that was missing from subsequent printings.) The game was never well received. Though there were some interesting ideas, the game was simply too chaotic with no real defensive positioning possible. The game tanked, however many of the ideas introduced here would re-emerge later.
France, 1999 saw a mutation of the Castle Risk game. Published jointly by Tilsit and Hasbro, Risk: Edition Napoleon was released with a print run of only 10,000 copies. The game was intended for two to four players and the map covered basically, the same area as Castle Risk. The general cards, first introduced in Castle Risk had grown to full units. This appears to have been an attempt to crossover into the war game market as the general units were given historical designations and historical variants based on Napoleon’s campaigns were included. Later an expansion was released that included a map overlay and two additional sets of player pieces.
Sometime during this period, the Hasborg cube assimilated both Parker Brothers and Avalon Hill. Deep in the confines of the entity, the borgites reworked the three previous Risk titles and mixed in concepts from modern gaming. Then in 2000, under the Avalon Hill label, Risk 2210 A.D. was released. Risk: Strongholds & Castles Map Pack For Mac Os
Risk 2210 A.D. was not a revolutionary game; it was evolutionary. An expanded version of the original map had returned, this time though, it included sea areas and additional route connections. The game of global domination became the game of global domination and beyond with the inclusion of a second map board representing the moon. What began as cards in Castle Risk, evolved slightly for Risk: Edition Napoleon had become full-fledged playing pieces in Risk 2210 A.D.; the commanders. There are five commanders: land, naval, space, nuclear and a diplomat. Five decks of commander specific cards accompany the units and this change alone logarithmically increases the strategic options presented the players. The castle/strongholds of Castle Risk had evolved into space stations; last-man-standing was gone, victory being determined by a point system based on board position and cards.
Four devastation markers, placed prior to the start of the game alters the map board itself for every game; no two games can be the same, ever. Added to these changes was a time constraint; the game lasts but five turns. No longer can a player wait, amassing a huge force, trying to alter positions in a single turn; each turn is an intense struggle to gain as many points as possible. The Hasborg had assimilated Risk and the Euro-style game resulting in a product, which in many ways is superior to both.
Then two years later Hasbro did it again. With the release of Risk: Lord of the Rings in October 2002, the game evolved again. (Note: Risk: Lord of the Rings was released one year earlier in Europe; the North American edition is the same with minor rule changes.) Once again back under the Parker Brothers label Risk: Lord of the Rings is a refined, less complicated version of Risk: 2210 A.D. In several areas it is a combination and extension of 2210 A.D. and Edition Napoleon. The map of Middle Earth has only 42 territories (as does classic Risk) and the five commanders have been reduced to one leader unit. Event, mission and power cards have replaced the five packs of commander cards. As the fellowship progresses through Middle Earth (and they move quickly), the game ticks down the turns. It is possible that with a full complement of four players and no one slowing the movement of the fellowship, the game would last little more than three rounds. Winning is dependant on territories controlled and the cards collected during the game though it is still possible to win by the total domination of Middle Earth.
The mechs of Risk 2210 A.D. have been replaced with orcs, elves and other generic representatives of Middle Earth. Missions have returned as well as strongholds. The game is intended for two to four players (ala Risk: Edition Napoleon) and, unlike most other Risk games, Risk: Lord of the Rings plays very well with just two players. Some have noted that the map of Middle Earth missing two significant areas found in the books. [Speculation: As with Risk: Edition Napoleon, an expansion was offered later that completed the map of Europe and included the pieces for two additional players. The map of Middle Earth extends to the very edge of the board, i.e. there is no border and there is a sea route that leaves the present board; I suspect that there is an extension planned that might appear if sales of this game justify it. The game as it stands, concerns itself with the areas found in the first two books/movies. It is possible that Hasbro is considering an expansion, to be timed with the release of the third movie, that would include the balance of Middle Earth and units for two additional players.]
It is inevitable that players will compare the near endless supply of Lord of the Rings games that have been released in the past few years. This game is Risk in Middle Earth; it is not Lord of the Rings with a Risk twist. It is an aggressive game (the players must play either the good or evil faction); it is definitely not cooperative.
Risk has evolved unlike any other game with the exception of Settlers of Catan. Both have evolved into more complex games, gone to space, offered expansions for additional players and sold in the millions of copies. Settlers of Catan has two variations not found in the Risk universe: a card version and a religious version. Though the planned card version of Risk never materialized, it may resurface. A religious version..? Both games are sold around the world and are published in a variety of languages. Risk has outsold Settlers of Catan but then it did have a 40-year head start. What is the magic that these games have, why do so many find these games so appealing? I believe the answer is twofold: first the mechanics of the systems are simple; they can be taught in a matter of minutes and allow for a tremendous number of different strategies. Second, there is continuous player interaction; every turn involves other players. (Consider the amount of player interaction in Settlers of Catan and Risk versus Carcassonne and Princes of Florence, both considered to be multi-player solitaire games.) It is the intricate and perfect combination of the systems and the player interaction that has resulted in games that should be in every game freak’s library. (Note: I did not include Magic or Dungeons and Dragons because they are not board games.) Bits and Pieces
The first two printings of Risk offered wooden cubes in two sizes (something the Euro’s still have), each color having its own container. In the 60s Parker Brothers downgraded the components to plastic. All of the units involved were generic. There was a print run in the 1980s in which the plastic ’stars’ were replaced with Roman numerals (I, III, V, X); this is now a coveted prize for Risk collectors. The 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition presented metal miniatures in three shapes: infantry, cavalry and cannons. The plastic boxes to hold the units were replaced with ’velvet-like’ bags. This edition was special not only for the limited run, the new units and the quality but for the fact that there is an error on the board itself. While redrawing the map for this edition the artist missed one of the connection routes to Africa. The same error can be found on the early printings of Risk 2210 A.D. (it’s an error Hasbro employees have acknowledged). All of the editions of Risk now have miniatures; the metal versions are gone, plastic rules again. Avalon Hill introduced eight new plastic molds with Risk 2210 A.D. There are three sizes of mechs along with five different commander molds. The packaging is improved as there are bins to hold the pieces versus the old throw-everything-in-the-box method. Two new maps are included with good but not outstanding graphics.
Indications are that with Risk: Lord of the Rings, Hasbro has taken note of the Euro market. The artwork on the map, the rulebook and the presentation is significantly improved over every other edition of Risk. The game box holds a formed insert that has a spot for each component; the four armies, the cards, the ring and five molded positions, one for each die. (There is even a bin that, I assume, is intended to hold taco chips.) To complement these improvements there are eight new molds for the units: two different leaders (shields), elven archers, orcs, riders of Rohan, dark riders, eagles and cave trolls.
Risk: Lord of the Rings is the finest presentation of a Risk game to date. We can only wonder how long it will be before Franklin Mint jumps in on it. Origin of the Species (or This Ain’t My Father’s Risk)

A Friday night in the fall of 1971 and it’s time to pull another ’all-nighter’. Ah, the college days; the time when pressure was having a psych paper due just when you were on the verge of discovering a completely new method for solving differential equations of the third degree, a feat, of course, that would result in the total economic re-alignment of the free world and better sex for all. So what do you do? Pull an all-nighter. This was not to be the standard sit-in-the-library-until-you-are-comatose-all-nighter; this is special; this is important. We pack the car and make the 90-mile trek to Chicago for an intense, non-stop, weekend of Risk. Hey, if you can’t change the world, why not just conquer it?
This is not to suggest that college was all play and no work but those Risk weekends were exceptional; on the order of a monthly game convention. Around campus the Risk freaks were viewed with disdain (this was, after all, the time of the Vietnam War) especially by the Chess players (but then, they thought ’free love’ meant that the local ’ladies’ were offering discounts). The poet Omar Kayam once penned: ’a loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou’. For us it was air hockey, pinball and Risk (the engineering majors would have included cigars). Unfortunately, as with everything else in the universe, the law of entropy required that this come to an end; and it did. Soon it was a mortgage, soccer practice and a mini-van.
Gaming of any kind was relegated to the wee hours of the morning and usually consisted of a computer opponent or something on the internet. It just wasn’t the same. It didn’t take long to realize that the refrigerator was not intended for cooling beer and soda; it is a gigantic, master scheduling board with a zillion magnets holding as many schedules and reminders along with school art, pop star posters and Pizza Hut coupons. The only face-to-face gaming over this period, the only exception to the monitor opponent was GenCon. Attendance was required and we made it every year; no exceptions. Each year we would discuss the changes we would try to make to get back into weekly gaming but it simply never worked. And then one day in August of 2000, I walked out of the house and realized that something was missing; something big was missing and this was very important. Though there were now four cars in the driveway; there was no mini-van! The kids could drive themselves to soccer; the scheduling board could be used to cool drinks again. I had some free time.
Occasionally the universe falls into sync; it actually cooperates and Mankind takes another small step forward; this was one of those moments. I had the revelation about the cars/kids/refrigerator/free time while waiting to be picked up for our trip to GenCon 2000. The knowledge that I now had additional free time intensified the normal anticipation of going to GenCon and seeing more of old friends. (Note: there is physically more of them to see - it’s true, muscle does turn.)
We arrived at GenCon, beginning our usual random walk eventually strolling to the exhibitors’ area. Navigating the maze of vendors, Klingons and Darth Vader wannabees, we stumbled on the new Avalon Hill booth; and there it was. As that renowned singer/philosopher Madonna once sang: ’like a moth to a flame.. ’, I was drawn. Forget the Bush-Gore campaign, Monica’s dress, the price of gas and the irrational exuberance of the stock market; forget it all. The planets were in alignment, tachyons were doing what tachyons are supposed to do, the Attack of the Clones was being delayed again; the universe was paying back. I stood there spellbound; there it was, displayed in all of its oversized, demo board glory. My heart raced, pores opened and rivers of perspiration rolled as I reached out to touch it, to roll the dice.
Risk 2210 A.D. had arrived. The addiction returned. A Trip to Middle Earth
Internet sites abound indicating archeologists have found Risk equipment dating to the time of Alexander the Great. I suspect their evidence is in error. The earliest evidence I discovered indicates that Joseph and his brothers brought it to Egypt with them and that the 6 player colors were derived from the colors of his coat. (I could be slightly off here as the Talmud is very cryptic on the matter and my Hebrew is rusty at best.)
Laying that aside, the question remains: where did it all begin? (At this time I suggest that the speilfreaks sit down so as to avoid hurting themselves in the event of a fall.) Risk originated in France (the first Euro?) in 1957 as La Conqueste du Monde, Conquest of the World. Parker Brothers introduced it to the United States, with slight modifications to the rules, in 1959. Parker Brothers renamed the game Risk: the Continental Game. According to legend, the R.I.S.K. are the initials of a Parker Brothers sales exec’s grandchildren. Some time later the game was re-titled Risk: the Game of Global Domination.
For those cave dwelling gamers who have never played Risk, a short synopsis is in order. Two to six players face the challenge of being the last-man-standing. It is the board game equivalent to a Battle Royal in Smack Down. There is never any doubt concerning who wins a Risk game; the game ends when there is only one player remaining, every piece on the board is the same color. The board is a stylized map of the world divided into 42 territories. Players receive armies in order to attack adjacent territories and add them to their empire. When the last territory of an empire is lost, that player leaves the game. Cards are won and sets formed to gain additional playing units. This is the earliest example of area control and set collecting, (so often found in today’s Euros) in a board game. Conflict is resolved by die rolls. Risk is a non-linear game and requires a smattering of statistical knowledge in order to play competently or as some have suggested, ’Be pretty damn lucky’.
That’s the core game; the same game as is found in Toys-R-Us and Wal-Mart today. In the past 43 years it has sold millions of copies and continues to sell to this day. At one point in the late 70s the game was so popular that Playboy magazine included it in a strategy guide they published. Numerous variants and house rules have been developed. The major portion of these involve alternate set-up or alternate objectives. In later editions of Risk, Parker Brothers included some of the more popular variants in what is known as ’mission Risk’.
In 1986, Parker Brothers introduced Castle Risk; the first new Risk in 27 years. The core system remained but everything else had changed. Radical alterations included a new playing map that covered only Europe, hidden armies and special cards including spies, marshals, generals, admirals, and a diplomat. The castles were strongholds and a naval component was added. (The original print run included a nifty plastic boat that was missing from subsequent printings.) The game was never well received. Though there were some interesting ideas, the game was simply too chaotic with no real defensive positioning possible. The game tanked, however many of the ideas introduced here would re-emerge later.
France, 1999 saw a mutation of the Castle Risk game. Published jointly by Tilsit and Hasbro, Risk: Edition Napoleon was released with a print run of only 10,000 copies. The game was intended for two to four players and the map covered basically, the same area as Castle Risk. The general cards, first introduced in Castle Risk had grown to full units. This appears to have been an attempt to crossover into the war game market as the general units were given historical designations and historical variants based on Napoleon’s campaigns were included. Later an expansion was released that included a map overlay and two additional sets of player pieces.
Sometime during this period, the Hasborg cube assimilated both Parker Brothers and Avalon Hill. Deep in the confines of the entity, the borgites reworked the three previous Risk titles and mixed in concepts from modern gaming. Risk 2210 A.D. was not a revolutionary game; it was evolutionary. An expanded version of the original map had returned, this time though, it included sea areas and additional route connections. The game of global domination became the game of global domination and beyond with the inclusion of a second map board representing the moon. What began as cards in Castle Risk, evolved slightly for Risk: Edition Napoleon had become full-fledged playing pieces in Risk 2210 A.D.; the commanders. There are five commanders: land, naval, space, nuclear and a diplomat. Five decks of commander specific cards accompany the units and this change alone logarithmically increases the strategic options presented the players. The castle/strongholds of Castle Risk had evolved into space stations; last-man-standing was gone, victory being determined by a point system based on board position and cards.
Four devastation markers, placed prior to the start of the game alters the map board itself for every game; no two games can be the same, ever. Added to these changes was a time constraint; the game lasts but five turns. No longer can a player wait, amassing a huge force, trying to alter positions in a single turn; each turn is an intense struggle to gain as many points as possible. The Hasborg had assimilated Risk and the Euro-style game resulting in a product, which in many ways is superior to both.
Then two years later Hasbro did it again. With the release of Risk: Lord of the Rings in October 2002, the game evolved again. (Note: Risk: Lord of the Rings was released one year earlier in Europe; the North American edition is the same with minor rule changes.) Once again back under the Parker Brothers label Risk: Lord of the Rings is a refined, less complicated version of Risk: 2210 A.D. In several areas it is a combination and extension of 2210 A.D. and Edition Napoleon. The map of Middle Earth has only 42 territories (as does classic Risk) and the five commanders have been reduced to one leader unit. Event, mission and power cards have replaced the five packs of commander cards. As the fellowship progresses through Middle Earth (and they move quickly), the game ticks down the turns. It is possible that with a full complement of four players and no one slowing the movement of the fellowship, the game would last little more than three rounds. Winning is dependant on territories controlled and the cards collected during the game though it is still possible to win by the total domination of Middle Earth.
The mechs of Risk 2210 A.D. have been replaced with orcs, elves and other generic representatives of Middle Earth. Missions have returned as well as strongholds. The game is intended for two to four players (ala Risk: Edition Napoleon) and, unlike most other Risk games, Risk: Lord of the Rings plays very well with just two players. Some have noted that the map of Middle Earth missing two significant areas found in the books. [Speculation: As with Risk: Edition Napoleon, an expansion was offered later that completed the map of Europe and included the pieces for two additional players. The map of Middle Earth extends to the very edge of the board, i.e. there is no border and there is a sea route that leaves the present board; I suspect that there is an extension planned that might appear if sales of this game justify it. The game as it stands, concerns itself with the areas found in the first two books/movies. It is possible that Hasbro is considering an expansion, to be timed with the release of the third movie, that would include the balance of Middle Earth and units for two additional players.]
It is inevitable that players will compare the near endless supply of Lord of the Rings games that have been released in the past few years. This game is Risk in Middle Earth; it is not Lord of the Rings with a Risk twist. It is an aggressive game (the players must play either the good or evil faction); it is definitely not cooperative.
Risk has evolved unlike any other game with the exception of Settlers of Catan. Both have evolved into more complex games, gone to space, offered expansions for additional players and sold in the millions of copies. Settlers of Catan has two variations not found in the Risk universe: a card version and a religious version. Though the planned card version of Risk never materialized, it may resurface. A religious version..? Both games are sold around the world and are published in a variety of languages. Risk has outsold Settlers of Catan but then it did have a 40-year head start. What is the magic that these games have, why do so many find these games so appealing? I believe the answer is twofold: first the mechanics of the systems are simple; they can be taught in a matter of minutes and allow for a tremendous number of different strategies. Second, there is continuous player interaction; every turn involves other players. (Consider the amount of player interaction in Settlers of Catan and Risk versus Carcassonne and Princes of Florence, both considered to be multi-player solitaire games.) It is the intricate and perfect combination of the systems and the player interaction that has resulted in games that should be in every game freak’s library. (Note: I did not include Magic or Dungeons and Dragons because they are not board games.) Bits and Pieces
The first two printings of Risk offered wooden cubes in two sizes (something the Euro’s still have), each color having its own container. In the 60s Parker Brothers downgraded the components to plastic. All of the units involved were generic. There was a print run in the 1980s in which the plastic ’stars’ were replaced with Roman numerals (I, III, V, X); this is now a coveted prize for Risk collectors. The 40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition presented metal miniatures in three shapes: infantry, cavalry and cannons. The plastic boxes to hold the units were replaced with ’velvet-like’ bags. This edition was special not only for the limited run, the new units and the quality but for the fact that there is an error on the board itself. While redrawing the map for this edition the artist missed one of the connection routes to Africa. The same error can be found on the early printings of Risk 2210 A.D. (it’s an error Hasbro employees have acknowledged). All of the editions of Risk now have miniatures; the metal versions are gone, plastic rules again. Avalon Hill introduced eight new plastic molds with Risk 2210 A.D. There are three sizes of mechs along with five different commander molds. The packaging is improved as there are bins to hold the pieces versus the old throw-everything-in-the-box method. Two new maps are included with good but not outstanding graphics.
Indications are that with Risk: Lord of the Rings, Hasbro has taken note of the Euro market. The artwork on the map, the rulebook and the presentation is significantly improved over every other edition of Risk. The game box holds a formed insert that has a spot for each component; the four armies, the cards, the ring and five molded positions, one for each die. (There is even a bin that, I assume, is intended to hold taco chips.) To complement these improvements there are eight new molds for the units: two different leaders (shields), elven archers, orcs, riders of Rohan, dark riders, eagles and cave trolls.
Risk: Lord of the Rings is the finest presentation of a Risk game to date. We can only wonder how long it will be before Franklin Mint jumps in on it. Origin of the Species (or This Ain’t My Father’s Risk)

Let’s give the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he wanted to make a really good FPS game as a basis, and then build up in scale? So the FPS thing would be one of the first things released, right? Well, no – it disappeared! I’ve got some ideas on what happened though. One might be just the hangar, one – “Arena Commander” – is nothing but combat, the one called “Crusader” is flying around this small mini-system. “Star Marine” was supposed to come out between “Arena Commander” and “Crusader”. In fact, throughout 2015 they had these constant weekly updates, saying that the game was “very close” – it was about to be released. It seemed like it’s coming out next week rather than next year. But then the updates stopped, with only a vague statement by Chris later, saying that they hadn’t gotten it to a comfortable level yet. So what happened to it? Well, CIG thought it would be a good idea to outsource the FPS portion of the game to another developer.
That’s not super unreasonable. They didn’t have the monstrous funding and staff power they have now. Although, outsourcing a critical part of your game that’s using an engine that’s being constantly updated and tweaked might not have been the best idea. They outsourced it to a company called IllFonic. You might not have heard of them. Their latest project was doing the co-op for… “Sonic Boom”… But they have experience doing standalone FPS games before. They’re responsible for the bubonic plague that was the “Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven” remake. So what do these two games have in common? They both use CryEngine. They’re sort of a McDonald’s for CryNet multiplayer. CIG probably hired them, knowing that they’ve worked on Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven.
So they outsourced an integral part of their game to a company known for shoddy workmanship. An understandable idea, but probably a bad one. They were still showing progress they were making though, so they had to be supportive of their work. I see two options as to how it vanished without a trace. One: like other products they’ve made, it was bad and not fun (or, alternatively, it wasn’t up to Chris Roberts’ ridiculously high standards). Because the scope and scale of the game had changed so much since they had pitched it to IllFonic, it might have not been good enough anymore. For whatever reason, the work just didn’t meet the standard. Or two: the game didn’t function. It’s possible CIG wasn’t keeping IllFonic up to date with their engine changes. For whatever technical reasons, “Star Marine” wouldn’t merge with the rest of “Star Citizen”. It was around the same time the company was already in some controversy for people thinking the game was gonna fail and funds were being leaked. So what do you think would happen? Was Chris Roberts going to post a letter that said: “The game is doing just fine. Everything is on schedule. But, by the way, as a side note, we’ve scrapped all of “Star Marine” and are starting over”? HELL. NO. They shoved the body under the floorboards and prayed no one would look for it! They would get so much bad press it’s unreal! Starting over can happen in game development, but they weren’t gonna share that when people were already skeptical about them. Especially since they needed the money to keep coming in. So now is the time to talk about that “other controversy”. I can safely say that everyone involved was being an idiot. Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven pc download In late September, last year, The Escapist posted an article titled “Eject! Eject! The “Star Citizen” going to crash and burn!” Except for some history at the end, it was mainly based on some blog posts. The main article it referred to, called “The Long Con”, actually appears to be pretty well-researched, but when you actually read through it, a lot of the more damning claims don’t have a citation. They come from an “unknown source” or leaker, which is hard to verify. It was also written by Derek Smart – a self-declared rival of Chris Robertses for over 20 years now. And when I say “rival”, I mean like a lemonade stand versus the Coca-Cola company. But their astronomical difference in success hasn’t stopped Derek from being critical of the project. If you take his quotes out of context, they sound more like Scipio Aemilianus.
He sounds like he’s about to burn Carthage and put its inhabitants to the sword, instead of just blogging about some spaceship video game. Anyways, the company responded to the article by posting a brief bullet point list, showing how its information could be invalid and, that’s not what happened. In response, Chris Roberts posted a 5000 word rant against the article. He started talking about… Gamer Gate? And posting Twitter screen-caps? I couldn’t believe this was real when I saw it! This isn’t a joke! So, throughout this letter, he’s trying to, like, attack and discredit Derek Smart, but he really doesn’t need to do any of this! He doesn’t even rebuke the points until the end of the letter! And even then, he still brings Derek Smart into his answers! If he’s the giant attention-seeking troll you’re claiming him to be, you just made his wildest dreams come true. Why would a CEO get so defensive over a blog that a nobody wrote? So, of course, he gave Derek Smart more credibility than he ever had before. And then, to make things more stupid and confusing, The Escapist posted a new article, from more anonymous sources! The last article had some quotes that seemed… possible… but these new claims were insane. Like claiming senior staff were sending out memos, calling people “faggot retards”, but the offended people never forwarded or saved these emails. Senior staff would loudly say things like “We aren’t hiring a black girl!” in front of employees. I know one of the employees used to have some really edgy shit on their website, but this wasn’t the same person. And they were years ago, and they apologized for them.
It also claimed that they didn’t want to hire people over 40, despite a lot of the staff looking like Crypt Keeper’s stunt doubles… Pretty sure they have a lot of non-white employees, too. It got so bad that The Escapist had to explain where each source came from. They did a terrible job at it. One of the person-vetting sources claimed they used an ID card with information blacked out, but the company doesn’t use ID cards… Chris Roberts, on his quest to get me to drink more, posted a new letter. He even let everyone know that corporate legal had told him not to post it! In it, he threatened to sue The Escapist, unless they apologized to staff, retracted the letter and then let a third party investigate them for corruption or something. The Escapist politely told him to piss off. The situation was so baffling to me, I thought it would be a good idea to interview Derek Smart. I had told him I’d be doing this video in mid-April, even before my “EVE Online” review was out. Later, when I was doing research on him, the game, the video and all the drama, I told him it was time for the interview. He did want the questions pre-screened, which I didn’t have a problem with. I told him I was curious about where his sources came from. I also wanted to know if he thought it was hypocritical to be nitpicking a “Star Citizen” alpha so heavily, when he has his own game in Early Access, called “Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven download”, which is reportedly barely functional. He suddenly became very difficult to get ahold of. He would ask what times were available, and I’d give them to him, but he wouldn’t respond with when HE could do it. It became a continual “maybe next week”. For the record, he was very polite when I was talking to him. But I think the engine was chosen for being pretty rather than for its technical merits for making Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven igggames. I DARE you to post a PS4 screenshot on the internet and say it looks good. Within abour 20-30 minutes, you’ll have a neckbeard there. He’ll start dumping all those “Crysis” screenshots from 2007, or maybe a “Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven dlc download” nowadays. The point of it is: no game will ever look as impressive as a good-ish series of FPS games. So, Roberts, remembering that people weren’t very happy with “Freelancer’s” graphics when he revealed it, decided he would use “the prettiest engine ever” to show off his new spaceship game. It’s the only thing that makes sense to me. Saying he did it just for the FPS features in it don’t really add up. He knew it had issues, but severely underestimated how long it would take to fix. Even now, net-coding is still the biggest concern. Let’s give the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he wanted to make a really good FPS game as a basis, and then build up in scale? So the FPS thing would be one of the first things released, right? Well, no – it disappeared! I’ve got some ideas on what happened though. I’m gonna explain this to people who don’t know how the modules work (Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven free download), but alphas of the game had been released in pieces. One might be just the hangar, one – “Arena Commander” – is nothing but combat, the one called “Crusader” is flying around this small mini-system. “Star Marine” was supposed to come out between “Arena Commander” and “Crusader”. It was all about FPS arena combat. The footage you’re seeing now is from November 2014, so it was definitely MADE. In fact, throughout 2015 they had these constant weekly updates, saying that the game was “very close” – it was about to be released. It seemed like it’s coming out next week rather than next year. But then the updates stopped, with only a vague statement by Chris later, saying that they hadn’t gotten it to a comfortable level yet. So what happened to it? Well, CIG thought it would be a good idea to outsource the FPS portion of the game to another developer.
That’s not super unreasonable. They didn’t have the monstrous funding and staff power they have now. Although, outsourcing a critical part of your game that’s using an engine that’s being constantly updated and tweaked might not have been the best idea. They outsourced it to a company called IllFonic. You might not have heard of them. Their latest project was doing the co-op for… “Sonic Boom”… But they have experience doing standalone FPS games before. They’re responsible for the bubonic plague that was the “Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven” remake. So what do these two games have in common? They both use CryEngine. They’re sort of a McDonald’s for CryNet multiplayer. CIG probably hired them, knowing that they’ve worked on Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven.
So they outsourced an integral part of their game to a company known for shoddy workmanship. An understandable idea, but probably a bad one. They were still showing progress they were making though, so they had to be supportive of their work. I see two options as to how it vanished without a trace. One: like other products they’ve made, it was bad and not fun (or, alternatively, it wasn’t up to Chris Roberts’ ridiculously high standards). Because the scope and scale of the game had changed so much since they had pitched it to IllFonic, it might have not been good enough anymore. For whatever reason, the work just didn’t meet the standard. Or two: the game didn’t function. It’s possible CIG wasn’t keeping IllFonic up to date with their engine changes. For whatever technical reasons, “Star Marine” wouldn’t merge with the rest of “Star Citizen”. Either way, the result was them scrapping “Star Marine”, taking what assets they could use, and then throwing the rest out, to start over.Total War: Three Kingdoms - Mandate Of Heaven Cracking
It was around the same time the company was already in some controversy for people thinking the game was gonna fail and funds were being leaked. So what do you think would happen? Was Chris Roberts going to post a letter that said: “The game is doing just fine. Everything is on schedule. But, by the way, as a side note, we’ve scrapped all of “Star Marine” and are starting over”? HELL. NO. They shoved the body under the floorboards and prayed no one would look for it! They would get so much bad press it’s unreal! Starting over can happen in game development, but they weren’t gonna share that when people were already skeptical about them. Especially since they needed the money to keep coming in. So now is the time to talk about that “other controversy”. I can safely say that everyone involved was being an idiot. Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven pc download In late September, last year, The Escapist posted an article titled “Eject! Eject! The “Star Citizen” going to crash and burn!” Except for some history at the end, it was mainly based on some blog posts. The main article it referred to, called “The Long Con”, actually appears to be pretty well-researched, but when you actually read through it, a lot of the more damning claims don’t have a citation. They come from an “unknown source” or leaker, which is hard to verify. It was also written by Derek Smart – a self-declared rival of Chris Robertses for over 20 years now. And when I say “rival”, I mean like a lemonade stand versus the Coca-Cola company. But their astronomical difference in success hasn’t stopped Derek from being critical of the project. If you take his quotes out of context, they sound more like Scipio Aemilianus.
He sounds like he’s about to burn Carthage and put its inhabitants to the sword, instead of just blogging about some spaceship video game. Anyways, the company responded to the article by posting a brief bullet point list, showing how its information could be invalid and, that’s not what happened. In response, Chris Roberts posted a 5000 word rant against the article. He started talking about… Gamer Gate? And posting Twitter screen-caps? I couldn’t believe this was real when I saw it! This isn’t a joke! So, throughout this letter, he’s trying to, like, attack and discredit Derek Smart, but he really doesn’t need to do any of this! He doesn’t even rebuke the points until the end of the letter! And even then, he still brings Derek Smart into his answers! If he’s the giant attention-seeking troll you’re claiming him to be, you just made his wildest dreams come true. Why would a CEO get so defensive over a blog that a nobody wrote? So, of course, he gave Derek Smart more credibility than he ever had before. And then, to make things more stupid and confusing, The Escapist posted a new article, from more anonymous sources! The last article had some quotes that seemed… possible… but these new claims were insane. Like claiming senior staff were sending out memos, calling people “faggot retards”, but the offended people never forwarded or saved these emails. Senior staff would loudly say things like “We aren’t hiring a black girl!” in front of employees. I know one of the employees used to have some really edgy shit on their website, but this wasn’t the same person. And they were years ago, and they apologized for them.
It also claimed that they didn’t want to hire people over 40, despite a lot of the staff looking like Crypt Keeper’s stunt doubles… Pretty sure they have a lot of non-white employees, too. It got so bad that The Escapist had to explain where each source came from. They did a terrible job at it. One of the person-vetting sources claimed they used an ID card with information blacked out, but the company doesn’t use ID cards… Chris Roberts, on his quest to get me to drink more, posted a new letter. He even let everyone know that corporate legal had told him not to post it! In it, he threatened to sue The Escapist, unless they apologized to staff, retracted the letter and then let a third party investigate them for corruption or something. The Escapist politely told him to piss off. The situation was so baffling to me, I thought it would be a good idea to interview Derek Smart. I had told him I’d be doing this video in mid-April, even before my “EVE Online” review was out. Later, when I was doing research on him, the game, the video and all the drama, I told him it was time for the interview. He did want the questions pre-screened, which I didn’t have a problem with. I told him I was curious about where his sources came from. I also wanted to know if he thought it was hypocritical to be nitpicking a “Star Citizen” alpha so heavily, when he has his own game in Early Access, called “Total War THREE KINGDOMS Mandate of Heaven download”, which is reportedly barely functional. He suddenly became very difficult to get ahold of. He would ask what times were available, and I’d give them to him, but he wouldn’t respond with when HE could do it. It became a continual “maybe next week”. For the record, he was very polite when I was talking to him. I also went to CIG to see if I could get some answers on the new development budget – how it’s changed since Kickstarter – but they didn’t have time for that. All too busy on the game.
